The beauty of a face not only depends on the shape of particular parts of it, but also on their harmony. The nose has a prominent central position in the face and therefore it considerably contributes to the overall impression. Each face requires a different shape of the nose, so the approach to each aesthetic nose correction has to be individual.
Aesthetic nose correction - rhinoplasty is one of the more common procedures in aesthetic surgery. Very often, the surgery is not only aesthetic, but also a way to a functional solution to the obstructed air flow through the nose in the persons with a deformed nasal septum. Still, the most common are solely aesthetic imperfections, which include either an irregular shape (nasal humps, saddle nose, crooked nose) or an unsuitable size of the nose.
Particular rhinoplasty techniques differ in various details, but the most important to point out are different approaches to surgery: outer or inner approach/incision. Unlike the outer incision, the inner incision, through the nostrils, makes the scar invisible from the outside, hidden in the nasal passages. It is the preferred approach, whenever it is possible. The surgery has to meet a number of basic criteria: a balanced shape of the nose, good function and proportions, as well as fulfilment of the patient's subjective longing for the desired appearance of the nose. All anatomical elements of the nose, which has been operated on, should, therefore, be normal and harmonious, so that it cannot be noticed at all that the person has had a nose surgery. Good respiratory function must be preserved after the surgical procedure; if it was impaired before the surgery, the corrective procedure has to be both functional and aesthetic.
Besides the profile, nose surgery changes the relationships of facial elements in all other projections; after the surgery, the nose proportions have to fit the overall appearance of the face, primarily the relationship among the forehead, nose and chin, so that the results of the surgery would suit the individual physiognomy of each patient.
Surgery is only advisable towards the end of the maturing period, when the nose has assumed its natural shape and size. The procedure lasts from 30 minutes to one hour, occasionally a little bit longer, depending on the work to be done (aesthetic or functional correction, or both).Cast and tampons are removed around 4 days after the surgery. Nose swelling, and possible bruising, mostly under the eyes, is mostly evident on the second and third day after the surgery, and then it gradually disappears over the period of 5 - 7 days. It is extremely important that the nose be protected from every trauma (pressure, hits etc.) during the first 6 - 8 weeks, and especially the first 4 weeks after the surgery. Early results are visible already after the cast is removed, but the final effects of the surgery are to be expected only in about 6 - 12 months. Even minor corrections of the nasal shape can already give the face a new appearance and deflect possible excessive attention of one's social environment.
